a look at a students work

The final project is clearly separated into set sections that cannot all be viewed at once. This seems like a good idea so that not everything gets mixed together and doesn't make much of any sense. Her work is very indepth and well written. I really like her use of an opening quote that starts everything out in the right mind frame. This shows me how I need to figure out how I would like to organize my work. I could set it up like hers in separate areas or have it all in one section.

The excerpt from Nickel and Dimmed shows all aspects of what I need to be doing for my final project. The interview, research, observations, and a splash of background are all mixed together. I like the way it just flows so naturally which is something i should really work on. The author makes this a very easy read. I can follow the writing without being pulled into multiple sidetracks. I can use this piece to situate my writing so that all 3 essays written so far will combined smoothly.

Research2

As I continue to conduct my research and my observations, I have noticed one big thing missing. I do not have any set rules or regulations set for the Corps of Cadets yet. The gentleman in the special collections section of the library mentioned something about how he had all of the rule books for the cadets dating back to the beginning. I will need to get ahold of these books so I can have more accurate information. As for my site, the routines are very visible (I mean they are cadets on set schedules). The basically have to do the same things everyday which makes it easy to catch on to everything they do.

Source

I found a source about cadets that live on college campuses. http://web.ebscohost.com/ehost/pdf?vid=2&hid=7&sid=396652d2-f464-4c73-a497-780eb27de422%40sessionmgr10 It is an online article and the link above brings you to it. It helps out a lot because it is answering some of my questions and gives me statistics about cadets. The article states that 9/11 caused a big increase in cadets at colleges. It supplies the numbers of this increase as well. This information gives me something to use as to answer my questions of why cadets join. There is one downfall though. The article is only about the Army ROTC so I could only use it to talk about the Army, not any of the other branches. I still believe it will be a good source though.

Research

For the research aspect of my project, the main things I will be researching would be the cadets and other schools that have a strong military base. These would provide the most relevance to my topic and project. It will allow me to learn more about the cadets through the years as well as give me some outlook on what cadets at other schools are like. I more likely will be getting most of my information on these subjects from articles and online databases rather than actual books. Learning about this will allow me to get more of a better understanding from the past and then will form a conjunction to what the interviews tell me about the present.

Reflection of "On Keeping a Notebook"

Didion's writing is so detailed and so indepth. Even though she is just recollecting, she still is able to describe everything. I need to be able to channel that into my observations. I have never been one to go into much detail so it makes observing and recalling that much harder. If I can make more detailed descriptions while I am at my site, maybe I can have observations that are as descriptive as Didion.

Observations

The air is humid. War Memorial Gym does not have air-conditioning so it makes it this way. The gym is not crowded. Its only around 7:30 P.M. and the rush is usually at 6:00 P.M. or 8:00 P.M. I notice there are people who do not look like students. They seem somewhat older, and I remember that War allows for outsiders to come in and use its facillities. A girl from my hall walks by me. I barely noticed her there until I see here waving. I make an awkward hello after I realize we both have headphones in. We both smile and then move on. Later, She pops up on the machine next to me, and I see a girl try and take her magazine. A few guys stand in front of the TVs and comment on the Tech game on the screen. A girl walks in and goes straight for the magazines. I have noticed that even thought they are ratty and ruined that girls still always grab them. I, myself, use the magazines to disstract myself from how long I am working out for. There are magazines all of the floor underneath the magazine shelf. There are paper towels overflowing the trashcan next to the case. A group of cadets walk in almost single file and just a like as if they were still being ordered of what to do. There is a smell of sweat in the air. As each person finishes their workout, they grab paper towels and the sanitizer to clean the machine they had just used. When everybody comes in as the rush starts, they all try to squish their bags and jackets into the lockers and on the ground.

Beginning project.

For the upcoming project for English 1106, there are three places that would be cool to look at. First, there's the bus. I would be cool to see how people are reacting on the crowded buses like the empo bus in the morning or before a test. Speaking of the Empo, that would be another place to observe. Just to see, how people are helped, what they are really doing there, and if it is actually a good system. Lastly, I think a tanning salon would be all cool place to observe. You'd get to see what kind of people actually go there.
